人的一生就是各種選擇的銜接和延伸，除了生不可選擇、死無(wú)需選擇，生死之間皆是選擇。
英文里常用來(lái)表示“選擇”的詞有：choice、alternative和option。這三個(gè)詞在有些情況下可互換，比如在表示“別無(wú)選擇”時(shí)，但它們的含義是有差別的。
關(guān)于這三個(gè)詞的區(qū)別，Usingenglish.com網(wǎng)站上有這樣一段表述：An option is one thing which can be chosen from a set of possibilities. When you have chosen one of the options， that is your choice. If you are not happy with that choice， you can choose an alternative – an option different from the one originally chosen.（Option是你能從諸多可能性中選出來(lái)的東西。當(dāng)你選出其中一個(gè)option，那就是你的choice。如果你對(duì)這個(gè)choice不滿意，你可以再選alternative，也就是不同于最初所選對(duì)象的option。）
Also， alternative should imply that there are only two possibilities， while there can be any number of options， although many people use alternative where there are more than two.（另外，alternative應(yīng)當(dāng)意味著總共只有兩種可能性，而option可多可少，不過(guò)很多人在有兩種以上可能性時(shí)也使用alternative。）
國(guó)際著名翻譯公司也就是說(shuō)，choice表示從眾多的人或物中進(jìn)行挑選，alternative強(qiáng)調(diào)在兩種可能性之間做出選擇，option則泛指可供挑選的可能性（也可指做出選擇的機(jī)會(huì)或能力）。
教育技術(shù)英語(yǔ)翻譯醫(yī)學(xué)翻譯需要考哪些證既然有差別，在翻譯時(shí)就須慎重對(duì)待，有必要盡量體現(xiàn)出這種差別，不可一律譯為“選擇”二字了事。例如香港《南華早報(bào)》網(wǎng)站9月14日的報(bào)道：As a start-up worker， Shao Wei had been looking for healthy meal options for those who had little time away from their computers. Meal replacements could be an alternative for busy workers but were unlikely to become popular with the general public. People can make their choice.（作為一名初創(chuàng)企業(yè)員工，邵煒一直在為那些沒(méi)什么時(shí)間從電腦前走開(kāi)的人尋找可供選擇的健康餐飲方案。代餐可以是忙碌員工的一個(gè)替代選擇，但不太可能在大眾中流行。人們可以自行選擇。）
專(zhuān)名里的“選擇”也各有不同，加拿大有Option Canada Party（加拿大選擇黨），美國(guó)有Institute for Alternative Futures（可選式未來(lái)研究所），國(guó)際上有Community of Democratic Choice（民主選擇共同體）。在翻譯時(shí)如何體現(xiàn)這些“選擇”的弦外音、潛臺(tái)詞確是一道大大的難題。
